Russia Approves Ban on Cryptocurrency Mining in Border Regions of Kursk Oblast

On May 19, according to Bits.media, the Russian government's legislative committee approved a proposal to ban cryptocurrency mining in the border regions of the Kursk Oblast. The ban affects eight districts and the city of Lgov. The governor stated that the move was made at the request of resource supply organizations, as residents in nine border districts are exempt from utility payments, including electricity. Establishing mining facilities would create a financial burden on the federal budget. The ban aims to prevent energy shortages exacerbated by attacks from the Ukrainian armed forces and difficulties in infrastructure restoration. The governor did not announce a specific implementation date but indicated that the ban might be lifted in the future if the situation improves. Previously, there were reports that the mining ban could be extended to the entire central region of Russia.
