Over 1,100 AI practitioners jointly petition, calling on the United States to support slowing down cutting-edge AI research and development

The organizers stated that the initiative has been signed by employees from nearly a dozen companies, including OpenAI, Anthropic PBC, Google, and Meta Platforms Inc. The initiative urges the US to support an international effort to set the pace for the research and development of more advanced AI systems when necessary. The initiative warns that the pace of AI development "genuinely has the potential" to outpace humanity's ability to "understand or control" it. Google stated in a statement: "We are committed to developing AI in a safe and reliable manner to benefit society." This initiative echoes the recent calls of several AI industry leaders. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and Google DeepMind CEO Demis Hassabis, among others, have previously called for the establishment of new international oversight bodies to review and set standards for cutting-edge AI models.
