The country's Deputy Prime Minister announced a comprehensive operation on June 1st, targeting Mestia in the Svaneti region. The primary action involves installing electricity meters across all villages in the area, with law enforcement support. By 2025, Mestia's electricity consumption is expected to be 133 million kilowatt-hours, over 13 times that of comparable Georgian towns. The government estimates that illegal mining operations cost the national energy system 20 to 25 million lari annually.
