Intel plans to launch an artificial intelligence chip by the end of this year, using cheaper memory and cooling technology than comparable products from Nvidia and AMD. Kevork Kechichian, who leads Intel's data center division, said the company is "starting from the ground up." Its new "Crescent Island" graphics processor is designed to accelerate "inference" tasks (the stage where users make requests), rather than model training—an area where Nvidia's processors dominate.
